AUDIOTRIP
In DC, a Cultural Event of Many Dimensions (VIDEO)
June 10, 2010
Once DC nightlife was ruled by party-a-week promoters – a DJ, a place, a line for drinks and out. Tasty, but lacking nutrition. As the city changes in culture while it changes its streetscapes, the night is increasingly being run by a growing crew of cultural mavens, men and women with designs of opening, not just you wallet. There’s Holly Bass and her performance art and poetry series, there’s Kristy Riggs and her “Sunday School” events on the revamped H Street corridor, and there’s KAT, of Lil’ Soso Productions, whose Harlem in Paris annual event is connecting a new generation to the previous renaissance before the one that’s clearly happening right now. Kat’s new focus is AUDIOTRIP, a multi-level, multi-dimensional, multicultural mix-up of soul, dance, performance and interactive art. The inaugural Audiotrip tossed together dj's daz-i-kue, wajeed, dj spinna, dj rich medina, dj 2-tone jones, dj roddy rod and the soul controllers for a domestic brew. Up next, an international mix and even more signs that a city so visible globally for one reason has a dramatically different life underground.
